Wes Lefroy

When did you first become interested in agriculture?

I initially stumbled upon wanting to study agriculture through being interested in environmental studies, but as soon as I started my agricultural science degree I fell in love and couldn’t imagine doing anything else. I love how diverse agriculture is and find the future of agriculture exciting from new developments on farms through to new developments in labs.

Since entering the industry I have become extremely passionate about all things agriculture leading to me advocating paddock to plate stories and trying to encourage consumers to think and understand where their food and fibre is grown, how and who by. This passion was ignited through a series of constant questions throughout my degree of whether I was studying to become a farmer, thinking this was the only available career path for an agriculture graduate, plus being asked by friends throughout my first job “what’s an agronomist?”. All of this has led to the creation of my Instagram, Facebook page and YouTube channel Get Agducated where I aim to show people the paddock to plate journey, teaching them things they may never have thought about and showcase what careers are available in the industry, and what a great industry it is to be a part of.

What is your role here at Rabobank?

I am a relationship analyst with the Esperance branch in WA. This role involves supporting the account managers and developing strong working relationships with clients in the Esperance region. I started at the end of May after returning from a working holiday in Canada. My background is in agricultural science, most recently working in cotton research agronomy in NSW. My role at Rabobank is very new to me but I’m so excited to have the opportunity to learn about the business and finance side of the agricultural industry. I’m really lucky to have joined such a great team to learn the ropes from!

How do you help our clients?

I assist and support clients with their general questions and queries. It’s my responsibility to get to know our clients and their businesses inside out to allow Rabobank to fully support them and represent their interests as best as possible.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I’m a people person, so I really enjoy getting to know our clients throughout the Esperance region. I also love working in such an engaged and positive team that holds the client at the forefront of everything they do.

How has COVID-19 affected the way you work?

I was lucky enough to be able to start with Rabobank in the office. This allowed me to work alongside one of my colleagues and ask him those annoying newbie questions face-to-face. Interacting with clients face-to-face hasn’t been possible in my first month with the bank so I’ve only been able to introduce myself over the phone. I’m looking forward to being able to put names to faces in the near future!
