Rabobank Australia announces new board appointment

Rabobank Australia Limited has announced the appointment of Andy Borland to its board of directors.

Mr Borland, the managing director of New Zealand-based diversified agribusiness corporation Scales Group, has joined the board, replacing retiring director John Palmer.

Announcing the appointment, Rabobank Australia chairman Bill Gurry said Mr Borland brought an “ideal combination” of extensive experience in both agribusiness and banking to the Rabobank Australia board.

The world’s leading specialist food and agribusiness bank, Rabobank is one of Australia and New Zealand’s largest rural lenders and a major provider of corporate and business banking services to the region’s food and agribusiness sector.

“As managing director of Scales Group, Andy has been responsible for the overall strategic direction and day-to-day management of one of New Zealand’s most significant agribusiness operations since 2011 and has worked with the company since 2007,” Mr Gurry said. “As such he has an intimate knowledge and understanding of the agribusiness sector in this region.

“Prior to joining Scales, Andy had a 20-year career in banking, which included serving in the role of head of Corporate at Westpac New Zealand.”

Mr Scales will also sit on the board of Rabobank New Zealand and is a director of apple and pear industry body Pipfruit New Zealand Incorporated.

Mr Gurry paid tribute to outgoing director John Palmer, who has served on the Rabobank’s Australian and New Zealand boards since 2004, and as chairman of Rabobank New Zealand since 2012. Mr Palmer is also a former chairman of Air New Zealand and, until recently, was acting chairman of AMP.

“John has made an outstanding contribution to Rabobank in both Australia and New Zealand over the course of his 12 years sitting on our boards. This period has coincided with extraordinary growth in the bank’s businesses in both countries and he has played a key role in steering the strategy and direction of the operations over that time,” he said.

In addition to chairman Bill Gurry, Mr Borland joins other directors of Rabobank Australia Anne Brennan, Sir Henry van der Heyden, Berry Marttin, Geerten Battjes, Sander Pruijs and Peter Knoblanche (managing director Rabobank Australia & New Zealand Group).
