Fraud on the Rise

At Rabobank, we’re proud to support Australia’s agricultural communities. From the wheat fields of WA to the dairy farms of Victoria, we know our clients work hard to keep the country running. But while you’re focused on your work and your life, scammers are working overtime to exploit new technologies and vulnerabilities.

What’s New in 2026?

Scams are becoming more sophisticated, and artificial intelligence (AI) is playing a major role. Criminals are now using AI to create fake websites, generate realistic images, duplicate documents and even write convincing emails and investment reports 1.

One of the biggest threats this year is AI-powered investment scams. Scammers are posing as financial advisors, building trust over weeks or months, and directing victims to professional-looking websites for fake companies. These sites often include fake ABNs, staff bios, and downloadable reports—all generated with assistance of AI1.

Job Scams Are Also Surging

The National Anti-Scam Centre recently reported a sharp rise in job scams, with over 3,000 reports and $13.7 million in losses in 2024 alone2. These scams often target people in rural areas looking for seasonal or remote work. Victims are lured with fake job ads, then asked to pay upfront fees or provide personal information that can be used for identity theft.

How to Stay Safe

  • Be sceptical of unsolicited offers: Whether it’s a job, investment, or prize, always verify the source.
  • Double-check websites and emails: Look for inconsistencies, and don’t rely on appearances alone.
  • Never pay to get a job: Legitimate employers will never ask for money upfront.
  • Talk to someone you trust: If something feels off, run it by a friend, family member, or your bank.
