Confirmation of Payee (CoP) is a layer of protection for Australian consumers when they’re making a payment between Australian bank accounts using a BSB and account number. It is an industry-wide service that checks the name of the person you intend to pay against the account details you enter. Where the recipient bank supports this service, you will be notified whether the name on the receiving account matches. This service helps to:
- give you greater confidence that your money is going where you intend it to,
- reduce the risk of making a mistake when making a payment, and
- provide protection against scams and fraud by adding an additional layer of security to the payment process.
For an Online Savings product, CoP is available when you are nominating a linked account during your ROS application and when you update your linked account details via online banking. It will not be available for staff assisted channels (phone or email).
When you apply for an account or update your linked account details via Online banking, Confirmation of Payee will check the name of the linked account holder against the account details you enter. You will then receive a response telling you if the details you’ve entered match. You can then make an informed decision about what to do next which may be;
- proceed with the payment,
- to check the details for accuracy, or
- not to proceed.
Note: If the result is a match or close match, the payee’s name will be displayed in the message (note: Business names will always be returned).
| ‘Match’ The account is in the name of Mary Smith*. | |
| ‘Close match’ The account is in the name of Mary Smith*. Please double check the recipient details as an incorrect payment may be difficult to retrieve. | |

Confirmation of Payee is an industry-wide initiative of Australian Payments Plus, and the majority of Australian banks have implemented it. It is a mandatory step when you are nominating a linked account during your ROS application, or when you update your linked account via online banking. You will see the saved outcome of the check each time you make a payment to your linked account.
Confirmation of Payee will not prevent you from making a payment unless the response received is “account closed”. If the result is not a match, it is up to you to decide whether you want to proceed with the payment.
Where the person making a payment to your account has a Confirmation of Payee (CoP) match outcome of “match” or “close match”, Rabobank, through the CoP service will provide the payer with your account name as part of the response. Business names will always be provided to the payer when a CoP check is completed against a business BSB and account number.
In limited circumstances it may not be appropriate for your account name to be displayed to others.
Eligible customers may request to be opted-out from having their name displayed to others via the Confirmation of Payee service.
To contact us about eligibility, please use the most convenient communication channel below:
- Message us using Internet Banking
- Send an enquiry via our website
- Call us on the phone number on our contact us page.
If your account is eligible and is opted-out, this means your account name and match outcome will not be displayed to payers.
Please note that your opt-out will not apply when a government agency is making a taxpayer funded payment to you, for example, a welfare benefit or emergency assistance payment. It is important to remember that opting-out could increase the likelihood of the payer not proceeding with the payment.
