Having grown up on a family vineyard and sheep farm in the Barossa, Henry Brooks has always had a keen interest in agriculture.

Currently completing an Agriculture Science degree at the University of Adelaide, it was during his second year that an agribusiness subject really piqued his interest in forging a career in the sector.

“I’ve always been exposed to agriculture, and I was fortunate during a gap year to work in wine-making, aquaculture and cattle production – so I knew first-hand the diversity of career options within the space,” he said.

And now, a recent scholarship through Rabobank’s Rabo Tertiary Pathways program is helping further define where his path may lead.

“I was already aware of the work Rabobank does in the agricultural sector, the fact that it’s a bank dedicated purely to farmers is an extremely attractive proposition,” he said. “I see the scholarship as an opportunity to develop skills in an area that I haven’t yet been involved with through my degree.”

The $15,000 Tertiary Pathways scholarship will help facilitate Henry’s research assignment, in conjunction with Rabobank and mentors Francis English and Will Dufty.

Henry’s research topic explores the evaluation of high yielding genetically modified wheat, and its benefits to modern agriculture.

“I’m passionate about improving the efficiencies of agriculture, and feeding a growing population, and am grateful for the opportunity to tap into the immense resources of Rabobank to help with my research topic.

He believes another key benefit of the scholarship is the opportunity to make contacts within Rabobank, and industry, whilst learning the processes involved within the business.

And whilst Henry has also secured a position as an agronomy intern at Nutrien Ag, it seems the world is his oyster when it comes to a future in ag.
