As she works her family’s Ardrossan Angus herd, Becky Bulle reveals a quiet confidence that defies her tender age.

It’s this natural aptitude for cattle that underpinned the 23-year-old’s return home to the Bulle family operation, where she works with her parents’ Rob and Sally Bulle, and brother Lachie, running a large scale Angus, Ultrablack and commercial herd.

Gaining skills through the Rabo Farm Managers Program

While Becky may feel at home in the paddock, the bright and energetic next-gen farmer admits she wasn’t quite as confident behind the scenes, and as such, recently expanded her management skills thanks to Rabobank’s Farm Managers Program (FMP).

Generous in her praise of the Rabo Farm Managers Program, she describes the week-long program as one of the greatest opportunities of her career.

“Being a manager isn’t just a title - it’s a journey of growth, and these are the programs that help shape it.”

“The Rabo Farm Managers Program was amazing, I’m so glad I took the leap and did it, I learnt so much about not just myself, but how I can adapt to the people and businesses around me to strengthen outcomes,” she explains.

“It gave me more confidence and communication skills – I don’t usually enjoy public speaking, yet I am now able to confidently represent our business at public events such as our recent on-farm Drought Management Field Day.”

“I shared insights, backed by my decisions, and represented our business with pride,” she beams. “I never could have done that in the past – the FMP gave me the confidence to address that crowd.”

Despite completing a Bachelor of Agricultural Business Management at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga, plus a Diploma of Accounting, she said the program gave her valuable insights into goal setting, business growth, managing people, and farm business specific production analysis.

“It brought clarity to my role in the family business and gave me confidence to step beyond the boundaries I’d quietly set for myself – the program empowered me to contribute ideas, challenge assumptions and grow into a role that wasn’t once a part of our business.”

“It also taught me how to align our breeding decisions with long-term profitability, and how to communicate that vision clearly, whether that’s writing a business article, or speaking to a client.”

The cohort of participants was also incredibly inspiring.

“One of the most interesting aspects of the Rabo Farm Managers Program was the discussions had with fellow participants, particularly talking to people from other industries,” she reflects. “There were horticulturalists who have to manage large numbers of employees, to grain growers where timing is everything – it was really fascinating to hear the different challenges from each sector, and what I could learn for our own operation.”

“It was quite sad saying goodbye on our last day, we all became very close, yet I have no doubt the networks built from the Rabo Farm Managers Program will be life-long.”

Learnings applied on-farm

Ardrossan Angus currently operates across 13 properties, with the main base in the Southern Riverina and Upper Murray districts of New South Wales and Victoria, with the high rainfall zone affording quality grazing pastures.

With Becky and her brother now home, she believes it’s more important than ever to have the tools to manage efficiently across generations.

“For so long it was mum and dad managing the farm solely, and where they may not have felt it necessary to write things down or keep records, with Lachie and I now home it’s more important than ever to maintain transparency around the business.”

“What someone thinks, and data on paper, can be two very different things, and it’s so important for better decision-making when it’s based on facts.”

“Implementing structure to our business performance analysis and decision-making ensures we are making informed, strategic and confident decisions going forward, especially in the current environment, when faced with challenges such as drought and market fluctuations.”

Continual forecasting, internal benchmarking and evidence-based decision-making will all now be integrated into Ardrossan Angus off the back of the Rabo Farm Managers Program.

Becky also reflects that it is also easy to lose track of your “why” when day-to-day demands take over, but “reminding yourself and those who are a part of the business brings clarity”,  and that she walked away from the Rabo Farm Managers Program with a stronger sense of purpose.

A bright future ahead

What was an initial stop gap working at home after university has quickly evolved into a career pathway, and Becky is excited to contribute to a future-ready cattle operation.

“I had no plans to return home so early, but since returning to help out during my uni holidays my passion for business and livestock has kept me home.”

“The genetic enhancements and results gained year-on-year, and our ability to sell seedstock genetics to clients is very exciting – we can see the positive impact we’re having on our clients herds and the greater industry.

“Building leading genetics requires long-term vision, and that’s definitely something I want to be a part of.”

With her skills, zest and boundless enthusiasm, leadership ambitions are certainly in reach, and not something she would shy from.

“I’m proud to be part of a generation that’s redefining what leadership looks like in agriculture, and one that values adaptability, change, and learning from one another.”

“I’d love to eventually step into a leadership role, in the business and in the industry, there’s so much opportunity in the beef industry and as a young person I think we all have a responsibility to continue growing and strengthening what past generations have built.”

In the meantime, however, she acknowledges that she still has plenty of experiences on her bucket list she’d like to achieve.

“I’m still young and think it’s important to enjoy a few different opportunities – I’d love to travel and work in Queensland or overseas, perhaps in a stud, or containment feeding – I want to learn as much as I can so that in the long term I can make a genuine meaningful contribution to our business, and industry.”

Rabobank supporting next-gen

It was the family’s Rabobank rural manager, Murray Wallace, who first suggested Becky take part in the Rabo Farm Managers Program – and the consideration Murray, and Rabobank has, for clients beyond just lending money is not lost on her.

“The fact that Murray is actively looking for opportunities to upskill clients, and their families, is incredible, and the number of events and programs we’re able to engage in thanks to Rabobank is so valuable.”

From the Rabo Client Council’s Financial Skills Workshop, the Young Farmers Group at Wagga, and the World Angus Forum in Tamworth, Becky has embraced the opportunities Rabobank provides.

“The networking at these events is incredible, the people we’re aligned with thanks to Rabo – from staff to fellow clients, who we continually have opportunities to meet and learn from – I don’t consider that we’d get that level of opportunity anywhere else.”

Becky also credits Rabobank for playing a pivotal role in the family’s growth over the past few decades.

“Support from Rabo has allowed us to build a resilient foundation for intergenerational continuity leading into the future, with our relationship with Murray Wallace, and past managers, built on trust and genuine understanding of a shared vision.”

“We value these relationships, not just for financial partnership but for growth and business strength.”
